The interlocked, sometimes wavy grain pairs wonderfully well with sapele’s fine, uniform texture and natural luster. Harder and heavier than African mahogany, but similar in color to traditional mahogany, sapele has become a reliable substitute—and cost-effective alternative—for use in furniture-making, cabinetry, boatbuilding, and even musical instrument manufacturing.
